Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Trump’s Missing in Action FEMA Head

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on media reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) ‘Acting’ Administrator was unreachable in the aftermath of the deadly Texas floods in July:

“The tragic loss of more than 130 lives in Texas underscores the absolute necessity of swift and competent federal disaster response. The Washington Post’s reporting that David Richardson, the Senior Official Performing the Duties of FEMA Administrator, was unreachable for nearly a day after the catastrophic flooding began is inexcusable and unacceptable. Mr. Richardson’s disappearance during this disaster undoubtedly slowed the Federal government’s response to help find missing children and adults. It shouldn’t have to be said that the leader of FEMA – of all agencies – should use a cell phone and be reachable during weekends.

“For decades, FEMA has been an agency that communities rely on in their most desperate hours. But the Trump Administration’s political meddling and stunning incompetence have hobbled FEMA’s ability to move quickly during disasters, when every minute matters. Delays and dysfunction cost lives, and it’s clear Mr. Richardson is not up for this moment. We will continue to press for accountability, and fight to ensure our nation’s emergency management agency has the leadership, personnel, and resources it needs to keep Americans safe.”
