Ranking Members Raskin and Thompson Issue Statement After Voluntary Transcribed Interview with Border Patrol Sector Chief
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Committee on Oversight and Accountability Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, and Committee on Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson, issued the following statement after the Committees conducted a voluntary transcribed interview with United States Border Patrol Chief Sean McGoffin, Chief Patrol Agent for the Big Bend Sector:
“We want to thank the U.S. Border Patrol and Chief McGoffin for voluntarily answering six hours of questions regarding the critical work Border Patrol does every day. We also want to recognize the good-faith efforts by the Department of Homeland Security to cooperate with Committee Republicans’ requests by making reasonable accommodations for today’s transcribed interview.
“Chief McGoffin’s testimony today debunked Republicans’ false claims about the border. The Biden-Harris Administration has made significant progress increasing border security.
“Since taking office, President Biden has taken decisive action to secure our southern border, including by directing historic levels of funding for border security and management, which has allowed law enforcement to disrupt drug smuggling operations by intercepting record levels of fentanyl before it crosses our borders. Additionally, the Biden-Harris Administration has pursued additional measures to expand pathways for safe, orderly, and humane migration, and address the root causes of unlawful migration.
“Instead of working with Democrats to support the critical work of our Border Patrol men and women, Republicans have introduced the ‘Default on America Act,’ which would cut 22% of the funds spent on border security and to stop fentanyl from entering our country. If Republicans are serious about addressing challenges at the border and fixing our immigration system, it’s time they give up on their partisan gamesmanship.”
