Republicans Reject Subpoena of Kristi Noem, Shielding Her from Answering for Her Multiple Failures

(WASHINGTON) – Today, during a performative Homeland Security Committee hearing put on by Republicans to attack religious organizations, charities, and non-governmental organizations – instead of conducting oversight of the Trump administration – Republicans rejected a motion to subpoena Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to answer for her many leadership and management failures. The motion was offered by Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee.

“In the past six months, we’ve seen the horrific results of Secretary Noem’s gross incompetence. Earlier this month, over 130 people died in Texas as it faced the deadliest floods in its history and because of Secretary Noem’s policies, FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Teams were not deployed until at least 72 hours and FEMA’s recovery center contracts were allowed to lapse leaving calls for help unanswered. As Texans suffered, Secretary Noem was posting glamour shots for her South Dakota official portrait on Instagram. Apparently, disaster response can wait—but Instagram posts cannot.

“She has also allowed ICE to execute racist immigration raids, haphazardly rounding up Americans and migrants alike based on skin color, ethnicity, and the language someone speaks. She has defied court orders to halt deportations and timely return wrongly deported individuals. Worst of all, the Secretary has overseen the deportation of American citizen children – including a 4-year-old with cancer.

“Secretary Noem has a lot to answer for and it’s a dereliction of duty for Republicans to shield her from any semblance of oversight. Because of their failure, the American people will suffer.”
