Republicans Unwilling to Address Domestic Terrorism

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement in response to Chairman McCaul’s response to Committee Democrats’ request for hearings on domestic terrorism:

"Chairman McCaul's response to Democrats' request yesterday for hearings on domestic terrorism is completely inadequate. The September 12 hearing to cover worldwide threats is an annual hearing that was scheduled prior to the domestic terrorism attacks last weekend. It will not allow us to go into the depth necessary to address the far ranging and multifaceted aspects of the threat posed by domestic terrorist threats from white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups. After years of requests for Congressional hearings and the deaths of many, this is nothing more than attempt to distract from a topic the Republicans are unwilling to address. Many of them have distanced themselves from the actions of these hateful, evil groups – but talk is cheap. The American people will be judging them by their inaction."
