Thompson Statement on TSA PreCheck Announcement

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement regarding news from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that it will expand its Trusted Traveler program, known as PreCheck. Members of the general public who enroll in PreCheck are expected to benefit from expedited screening procedures. PreCheck enrollment centers will start opening in the fall of 2013 and will charge $85 for PreCheck screening and enrollment. Enrollment will remain valid for 5 years.

I applaud Administrator Pistole's announcement that TSA will begin offering the traveling public a less costly and more convenient way to enroll in the agency's expedited screening program. If done right, the program has the potential to afford a greater number of individuals who pose no threat to aviation security the type of less invasive passenger screening frequent flyers and other handpicked populations have enjoyed for over a year. As with all screening programs administered by TSA, the success of the endeavor will be dependent on effective communication with the public and effective management behind the scenes.
