Trump Administration Passing the Buck on Finding Parents of Separated Children
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on the Trump Administration’s latest proposal to have the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its partners be responsible for finding the parents, already deported by the Administration, of children at the border that have been separated from their families.
“The indifference and passivity that the Trump Administration is putting into their court-ordered effort to reunite separated families at the border is staggering. The Trump Administration created this chaotic humanitarian crisis wholly on their own. Now stunningly, the Administration wants the ACLU, a not-for-profit with limited resources, to clean up the mess they created. It’s been a week since they missed the deadline to reunite all children – and hundreds of children still remain in Federal detention with little hope of seeing their parents. This outrageous proposal underscores that the Administration is either completely unable or unwilling to put the full force of the United States government towards reuniting these children and their families.”
