Trump Ends His First Week How He Began His Campaign: Sowing Fear and Embracing Stereotypes
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the Executive Order on refugee vetting:
“In his first week in office, President Trump has used the power of the Presidency to unilaterally issue directives based on the fear mongering, stereotyping, and bigotry that Americans first heard when he descended the escalator at Trump Tower in June 2015. Since taking office, the President has devoted more time to making baseless claims and issuing empty edicts than tackling this nation’s challenges."
"It is reprehensible that on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, he chose to slam the door to women, children, and other victims of the Syrian Civil War and other conflicts to further his so called ‘Muslim Ban’. The United States has a rigorous and robust refugee vetting process. It is saddening that instead of further strengthening that process, the President has chosen to grandstand at the expense of the victimized and the vulnerable.”
