Canceling FPS IT Contract Saves Taxpayer Money
(WASHINGTON) – Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released the results of an audit of a Federal Protective Service contract in a report entitled "FPS' Exercise of a Contract Option for the Risk Assessment and Management Program (RAMP)" (OIG-12-67). The contract was canceled after an investigation by the Committee's minority staff. To date, $41 million has been spent on the Risk Assessment and Management Program (RAMP). RAMP was intended to be a risk assessment tool to manage the FPS workforce but it was grossly over budget and failed to fulfill its original goals. Cancellation of the contract saved the government over $13 million.
Congressman Thompson released the following statement with the report:
"While our oversight led to the cancellation of this contract and a $13 million savings for the American taxpayer, we cannot ignore the need for continuing reform at FPS. The current leadership at FPS is committed to reform and I will continue to oversee the operation of this agency. The safety of Federal facilities must be a major goal of the Department of Homeland Security."
