EEOC to Investigate Employment Practices at TSA

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement after receiving notice from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that it will conduct a program evaluation of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The EEOC is undertaking this evaluation of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) process and procedures at TSA in response to a request from Ranking Member Thompson following the release of a Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General report from November 2012 which noted substantial allegations of discrimination and portrayed an EEO complaint process which actively discouraged employee complaints within TSA. Unfortunately similar concerns about bias in employment have been raised at TSA in the recent past.

I am encouraged that the EEOC agreed with my assessment of the Inspector General's findings and will conduct an investigation of possible discrimination at TSA and review any possible non-compliance with federal workplace protections, said Ranking Member Thompson. These protections were put in a place for a reason – and we cannot allow discriminatory practices to undermine TSA's critical mission of securing this nation against the terrorist threat.
